Office Opening Up

Now that you have evaluated how you will function better in part one of the series, it’s time to take it to the next step. According to a Gallop Poll, almost two thirds of employees are working remotely – even now.

Learn more about staffing levels and what the new normal means for your business after opening back up.

Does Opening the Office Mean Hiring Is in Order?

Not so fast. In fact, many offices will have to pivot to accept how many things have changed. While the office isn’t going anywhere, there are areas that can expand and those that need downsizing.

It is an ideal time to look at your staffing needs and see if changes are in order. Is your company thriving with a skeleton crew? Will that change once you’re fully open? No matter how things are working now, and let’s hope they’re working well for you, you will most likely need to hire some team members.

Whether you lost some who couldn’t work remotely or you had to lay off employees, make a decision on what someone new can add to your team.

What About Gaps on Your Team?

Having to close for any length of time means some team members will go elsewhere. Yet, that also means that there are many others out of work. You may have a good pool to choose from during this time. Perhaps this is a good time to start thinking ahead.

Instead of waiting till it’s down to the wire, start evaluating your employees now. Who is loyal? Who has done exceptional work? And unfortunately, some may not be up to par.

Will a Return to the Office Mean More Work or Less?

This is a difficult question to answer right now. For some businesses, the work load will flourish. And that’s what everyone wants. A productive workplace is what we strive for. The pandemic may change how we work, but it doesn’t change the fact that we need the work.

This is why it is good to look at the staff you have and evaluate what will happen once you’re up and running at full capacity. Some current employees may not want to give up working remotely. And this may be just fine, depending on what type of business you have. Yet, for those in sectors that demand a warm body in place, you must fill those gaps as soon as possible – not when you’re ready to open.

Have Some Employees Stepped up and Shown Additional Abilities or Motivation?

Every employee is unique. And some will step up and showcase abilities you may not be aware of them having. Others may have motivation that impresses you, especially at a time like this. Those loyal employees are the kind you want under any circumstances – both open or on lockdown. The trick is finding out which you have and if there are replacements needed.

Some team members only thrive in-person surrounded by other employees. And not everyone enjoys working remotely. Who does well no matter what the circumstances? Look for those kinds of people, so your staff is at its best during closures and when fully open.
